Oprah Winfrey's South African School Trail To Start
A trial date of April 21st has been set for the matron accused of abusing students at Oprah Winfrey's school for girls in South Africa. The suspect, Tiny Virginia Makopo, who is 27, faces charges of indecent assault, assault, and criminal injury, in alleged incidents with six students ages 13 to 15 and a 23-year-old fellow dormitory matron at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls outside Johannesburg.
Makopo appeared in court on January 16th with a towel over her head and did not speak during the proceedings.
Winfrey made several trips to the school to reassure students and offer apologies to them and their families after the abuse came to light. Winfrey also suspended two matrons and the school principal during the investigation into the alleged abuses.
The talk show queen spent $46 million to open the academy in January 2007. At the opening she said that launching a school that would provide quality education to underprivileged girls was "the proudest, greatest day of my life and a dream come true."
