Singer and songwriter Brian McKnight likes to spend the Christmas holidays with his children and extended family every year. The Buffalo, New York-born Grammy winner says he has wonderful memories of growing up and spending the holidays with his own family, including his brother Claude McKnight of Take 6.
Recently he explained: "My parents were always so good at making sure we had the greatest Christmases. We had theme Christmases for a while. I'm from Buffalo, so one year we all got hockey equipment because out backyard was the neighborhood playpen. So my father would make a rink in the backyard and all the kids, we'd play hockey. I know, I know, black kids playing hockey. But our neighborhood was diverse. I mean, one of the first neighborhoods I'd been in that had so many different types of people."
Racing motorcycles is also one of McKnight's current hobbies, and he believes the passion came from another early Christmas present: "I can remember one time I got this motorcycle. I think this is where my affinity for motorcycle riding started because I was already riding by the time I was six. but I got this wind-up motorcycle that would take off and jump over a jump. It was the silliest little toy, but I played with it. 'Till it broke. It broke like two days after Christmas, but for those two days it was the best!"
McKnight wrapped up his very first run on Broadway last month playing lawyer Billy Flynn in the musical Chicago. His most recent CD is the 2006 release Ten.
