Alicia Keys Says Travels Helped Her Find Herself Again

Alicia KeysAlicia Keys said that she had to take some time to travel by herself and heal from personal challenges before she rediscovered her own musical voice. Her renewed spirit can be heard on the brand-new CD As I Am, featuring her anthemic single "No One."

Keys said that the responsibilities of success and the illness of a family member left her feeling drained and unsure of herself. So she decided to take a little time to see other countries. She explained: "So that trip made a big impact on me, it gave me -- for the first time ever in my whole life, I've never taken a trip by myself, ever. And I was totally by myself in places that were truly inspiring."

After traveling through Africa and Europe, Keys says she became inspired to tap into the power within: "So I really came back like invigorated, And after seeing these temples and these tombs and these pyramids and these things that have existed for thousands of years and were built by man's own two hands and mind and will. I was like, wow! It gave me a whole new perspective on the things I could do and the things I could build and things I could create and the legacies I could leave behind for others to be in awe of, and I just became renewed."

Keys is set to perform live this Sunday (November 18th), on the American Music Awards, being broadcast on ABC from the Nokia Theatre LA Live in Los Angeles.
